Sometimes you need to pick off a square part out of round material on a Swiss Lathe. And in this tip, Lance will tell you what kind of collet you need to use, and how to do a phase adjustment with the sub-spindle and the main spindle – a key step in getting this done right.
Video Transcript:
Today’s quick tip is about picking off a square part from round material on a Swiss machine. Today, we’ll be doing a phase adjustment, which involves synchronizing your front and main spindle to pick off square or hex stock. Synchronization is mandatory to effectively pick off your square part and utilize your backside tooling.
We’ll start with the collet. The collet needs a slot, which will align with a drill and pin in your collet line. Slot the collet, and it will fit into a drilled and pinned collet sleeve inside the machine. Place the collet in the machine, ensuring the pin is aligned with the slot. In this example, we have already run a part, and we’re ready to synchronize the front and main spindle.
Once your CET Mill is installed in the machine, and you have the general shape of your part on the front side, feed Z out and bring your sub spindle in. Move your collet in to pick off the part. You may need to orient the collet manually to ensure it picks off in the correct spot.
Next, go to the preparation page menu and select phase adjustment. Choose number two on this machine, which will synchronize your front and back spindles. The machine will ask if you want to use the pickoff and clamp down; confirm that you do. Press the phase adjustment button and cycle start. The machine will lock onto the part, perform a spin inside the machine, and once the green light goes out, your front and back spindles will be synchronized.
